How to change favicon for Joomla sites?

Submitted by on May 3, 2009 – 12:33 pmNo Comment

How toThere are many people who uses Joomla CMS find it difficult to locate the real source of the favicons for their templates. I will explain how you can do this in this post.

A favicon is the small picture that shows with the url in your browser when you loads a website. The following screen shot shows a favicon of a dating resources portal.

Prepare your image
In order to change this picture, you would need to prepare one for your site. A
preferable size would be something squarish. The actual size of favicon is 16 x 16 pixels.

Convert to favicon format
Once you have the image for favicon, you have to convert it to .ico format. If you already have a converter to do that for you, great. If not, pop over to Dynamic Drive Favicon Converter and do it for free.

Replace the old favicon with your new one
This is the most painful step as many people have been spending hours searching for the correct favicons to replace in their Joomla sites. You need to replace the favicon in the template that you are using. For example, if your template is the default, rhuk_milkway, the directory of your old favicon is mysite.com/templates/rhuk_milkway/favicon.ico

Replace the template name with whatever template that you are using and you are done!

Please take note that it takes a while for your new favicon to show. Even a hard refresh (Control + F5) don’t reveal the new favicon at times. Check back in three days and your new favicon will be nicely displayed for your visitors =)
